I delivered a sermon titled Plan for Your Future at the graduation party of a dear young man in my local church. God led me to minister to him then from Proverbs 16:1-4.
”1 The plans of the heart belong to man,
Proverbs 16:1-4 ESV
but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
2 All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,
but the Lord weighs the spirit.
3 Commit your work to the Lord,
and your plans will be established.
4 The Lord has made everything for its purpose,
even the wicked for the day of trouble.
How to Plan for Your Future
Proverbs 16:1-4 reveals the fundamental principles of planning for your future, namely, how to plan for your future with wisdom and faith. Verse 1 establishes that plans and planning involve two (2) players: the planner and God. Then Proverbs 16:2 adds that the planner always views his/her plans as right, but God weighs the planner’s spirit.
🧭 1. Planning Involves Two Partners: You and God
“The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:1)
Planning is not sinful. It’s biblical. Proverbs immediately teaches us that you’re not the only one at the planning table. God is your co-architect.
-
You make plans for your future.
-
God weighs your motives and directs your outcomes.
God is interested in the intentions of the plans you have for your future
Consequently, Proverbs 16:2 warns us:
“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.”
You may think your plan is solid, or even perceive that your plans are right or holy because of your self-righteousness. But only God sees the heart behind it.
He, therefore, looks at your heart (thoughts), that is, He searches and tries your heart. The Lord God does this because He is interested in the intentions of your plans or intended actions.
So we must ask:
Why do I want what I want?
Is it pride? Selfish ambition? Or a desire to glorify God?
“Your plans matter — but your motives matter even more.”
🧠 Jeremiah 17:9-10 reminds us:
“The heart is deceitful above all things… but the Lord searches the heart and tests the mind.”
🕊 Bottom line:
Don’t just ask, “What should I do?” Ask, “Why do I want this, and is it pleasing to God?”
Consequently, you and God are the two (2) parties involved in your plans for your future. You plan while God weighs your spirit. And remember, when you are self-righteous, your motives will be characterized by pride and selfishness (Proverbs 16:5).
No wonder prophet Jeremiah wrote: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick (or wicked)” (Jeremiah 17:9a). And after that, he posed: “Who can understand the heart?” (Jeremiah 17:9b). Then he answered that “The Lord searches the heart and tests the mind, to give every man according to the fruit of his deeds” (Jeremiah 17:10).
More Insight
Additionally, the Writer of the letter to the Hebrews wrote that: “… all (creatures) are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). And Apostle Paul weighed in that: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
🙏🏽 2. Commit Your Plans to God and Let Him Lead
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)
Once you have made your plans, hand them over to God. Let Him take the lead.
In Proverbs 16:6, the Wiseman exhorted you and me to commit our work (plans) to God. He then added that God would establish your work (Proverbs 16:3) according to His thoughts for you (Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 139:17, and Romans 8:28). That is, your plans need to be aligned with God’s will, and when this is the case, He will ensure their success.
📌 Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord…”
📌 Romans 8:28:
“All things work together for good, for those who love God…”
📌 Proverbs 21:5:
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance…”
Illustration
Think of it like saving a document in the cloud. You may have drafted it on your device, but if you want to preserve it and access it from anywhere, you should upload it to the cloud so you “never lose anything”.
So yes, be diligent. Plan well. But above all, submit your plans. That’s when God establishes them.
Proverbs 21:5
Similarly, Proverbs 21:5 states, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” This verse emphasizes the value of diligence in planning and the blessings (positive outcomes) that result from it.
🙌🏽 3. Submit to God’s Will, Even When It Redirects You
“You who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go…’ yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring…” (James 4:13–15)
James teaches us that planning is wise, but arrogance in planning is dangerous. He teaches that we should instead say: “If the Lord wills, we will do this or that.”
The apostle invites those who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit” (13) and cautions that “they do not know what tomorrow will bring” (14a).
This is not passivity, it’s humble confidence in God’s sovereignty.
✅ Make plans.
✅ Dream big.
✅ Aim high.
But also:
“Hold your plans with open hands, because God’s version of your future is always better than yours.”
Because James exhorts you to say, “for the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:15). That is, Apostle James advises that while it is essential to plan for the future, you must hold your plans with an open hand. You must acknowledge that God’s plans may differ from your own, a reminder of the importance of submitting our plans to God and surrendering to His will.
🎯 4. You Were Created for a Purpose
“The Lord has made everything for its purpose…” (Proverbs 16:4)
Finally, the Wiseman revealed that God made everything for its purpose (Proverbs 16:4). This includes you.
Therefore, your life is not random. You are not a statistic.
The thing is: You were created by God, for God. God created you on purpose, and with a purpose. He made you for His joy and eternal life or prosperity.
Made to glorify Him
I want you to note that God makes everything in your life glorify Him. But you first have to commit your plans to Him for you to fulfill your purpose and glorify Him.
Psalm 139:16: “All the days ordained for me were written in your book…”
Consequently, you should be intentional about glorifying God with your time, talent, and treasure. You were made to glorify God with your:
-
Time — use it wisely. (Psalm 90:12)
The Psalmist in Psalms 90 and 139, verses 10 and 16, respectively, revealed that God has set a tenure for your life. So you have to use the limited time God has given you wisely. Time lost isn’t recoverable. You have to submit yourself to God’s guidance.
-
Energy — especially while you’re young. (Ecclesiastes 12:1–8)
- Gifts — in service to God and others. (Romans 12:6–8)
Additionally, you have to use your energy (Ecclesiastes 12:1-8) under God’s guidance. Now is your time (season) to build the spiritual, social, and economic foundations that will last you the next twenty (20) years. You therefore have no option but to grow:
- in God and serve in the Church,
- your family and your network, and
- your value, education, career-wise, and economically.
Best time to build
🎓 This is, therefore, season is the best time to build:
-
Your spiritual foundation (grow in God, serve in church)
-
Your relational foundation (family, mentors, accountability)
-
Your professional foundation (education, skills, character)
Build it with purpose.
Build it with God.
🧳 Conclusion: Plan for Your Future Faithfully. Live Boldly. Trust Deeply.
As Christians, we’re not called to drift through life. We’re called to plan, prepare, and pursue, but with God’s wisdom and guidance.
But planning for the future is not about living in fear or anxiety. It is rather about being good stewards of the resources and opportunities that God has given us. Because it is important to live in the present and trust in God’s plan for our lives.
Therefore, diligent planning and wise stewardship of the resources and opportunities from God and men are the marks of a Christian. And by aligning our plans with God’s will and making thoughtful preparations for the future, we demonstrate our faith in God and obedience to Him.
Holding our plans with open hands, trusting that God’s purposes will prevail and that He will guide us as we prepare for the days ahead, is undoubtedly crucial and essential for us. These are the considerations for the future, and the need to make thoughtful preparations.
Parting shot
So as you step into the future, remember:
-
Plan for your future, but let God search your heart.
-
Commit your plans to Him, and He will establish them.
-
Submit to His will, even when it surprises you.
-
And live for His purpose, because that’s why you were created.
🙏🏽 “May you make wise plans, bold steps, and lasting impact, all in the center of God’s will.”
Congratulations! May your future be one of faith, fruit, and eternal fulfillment.
