The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

Proverbs 14:1New International Version (NIV)

Proverbs 14:1 ~ The wise woman builds her house

According to Proverbs 14:1, the wise woman builds her house. This is because wisdom will enable her to build it.

Women, that is, mothers and wives, are naturally considered to be the builders of their houses (families). Thus, the wise man reveals that building or tearing down is the woman’s responsibility.

The foolish woman, therefore, tears down her house with her hands because she lacks wisdom. And the Bible has many examples of such women. Two of them are Ahab’s mother and wife. These influenced Ahab to turn into a proud, godless man.

Therefore, Ahab ended up destroying not just himself, but every single child born to and of him. Thus, his mother and Jezebel destroyed and tore down their houses with their own hands.

Remember, wisdom is what enables a woman to build her house. And it comes from God.

When you fear God, He gives you wisdom (Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10). Meaning that a wise woman fears God. That is, she reverences Him and honors Him in her life. She puts Him first and He provides the wisdom, instruction, and insight to her to build her house.

Wisdom is the blueprint that guides and directs the woman on how she will use the available resources, experiences, and knowledge to build her house (Proverbs 3:13-15). It is what will guide and direct you and me on how to use what God has given us to build up and not tear down.

Therefore, a wise woman will have the discernment to know which actions, thoughts, and words will build and which will destroy. Consequently, she will choose accordingly and action the same.

Building or tearing down, whether consciously or unconsciously, is a personal undertaking. Given that for each of us, a house represents anything that can be developed, then we need to understand that either building or tearing down is both a personal initiative and responsibility.

Prayer/Blessing

Therefore, purpose to be a builder of your house. Fear God and ask Him to give you wisdom (James 1:5).
