38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 ~ Nothing can separate us from the love of God

The gist of Romans 8:38-39 is that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Absolutely nothing!

Apostle Paul had been through lots of trouble. He had experienced unjust persecution, famine, false arrest, shipwreck, the threat of murder, and so much more.

Paul’s experiences are the very things that made him conclude that nothing that he had gone through could separate him from God’s love. Thus, he stated that neither death nor life, present nor past things, height nor depth, and powers nor creation, could separate us (believers) from God’s love.

Consequently, Paul’s letter to the Romans, and chapter 8, in particular, ends up as arguably the greatest chapter in the entire Bible. Thus, verses 38 and 39 could be among the greatest verses in the entire Bible.

“No separation” is one of the two pronouncements that constitute the bookends around Romans chapter 8. The other is “no condemnation”, and together with the former, there will never be a separation courtesy of “no condemnation”. That is, there will be a “no separation” because there is “no condemnation”.

Paul’s repeated use of the negatives “neither” and “nor” is not without aim. His aim is to create a strong impact upon his reader.

In addition, Paul also uses opposite extremes like death and life, or height and depth, to cover for anything and everything that could possibly separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus.

His strong conviction, therefore, implies that God’s love, and the promise of eternal life, are an absolute assurance. Therefore, regardless of what you are going through, or what you will ever go through, they cannot disconnect you from God’s great, incomprehensible love.

Prayer/Blessing

Lord, I thank and exalt You for Your great love for me. I rest in the assurance of Your love in Jesus Christ’s Name, Amen.

May you be strongly convinced that God’s love for you is permanent. Amen.
