If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

God will forgive you when you confess your sins

1 John 1:9 says that “God will forgive you when you confess your sins”. This is because God is faithful and just.

Therefore, His faithfulness and justice will be available to you when you confess your sins. And confession is simply aligning with what God has said in His Word, or agreeing with Him concerning something.

But while God invites us to confess our sins so that He will forgive us, does this then mean that if we do not confess our sins to Him, He will not forgive us? The answer is a big resounding NO.

The truth is that God has already forgiven us for all our sins, past, present, and future. And John’s words in this verse are God’s comfort for you is in His promise of forgiving and purifying you from all unrighteousness.

Moreso, this is the forgiveness that apostle Paul addresses, the relational (parental) type. It is therefore not the judicial one.

Besides, when you got born again, you received judicial forgiveness. This is because God the judge freed you from eternal condemnation.

You will receive parental forgiveness when you acknowledge that you have displeased (aggrieved) God your Father through sin. This means that your confession (Psalm 32:1-5) is the way to His faithfulness and justice.

The Bible reveals that He is always ready to forgive and purify you from all unrighteousness. And this is not a one-time act. It is a continuous act, where confession begets forgiveness.

Prayer/Blessing

Lord, I confess all my known (please specify) and unknown, and intentional and unintentional sins to you now. I am begging You to forgive and purify me from all unrighteousness. And I receive Your righteousness in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

May you gather the strength and courage to confess your sins. Amen.
