How to read the Bible in a year” is a Bible Reading Plan that is designed to help you do just that. Meaning that you will be able to read (not study) the Bible in one year.

Therefore, whether you have resolved or not, spending time with God in His Word is a very valuable or worthwhile undertaking. Some credible research suggests that engaging the Scripture at least four times a week greatly contributes to spiritual growth.

Nevertheless, reading the Bible in a year will enable you to:

  1. Understand the story of the Bible
  2. Know the message of the Bible
  3. Know God, His will (what He’s like), and fellowship daily with Him in a vibrant way
  4. Not take Bible verses out of context
  5. Learn who you are in Christ

How to read the Bible in a year

Reading the Bible in a year is therefore helpful in obtaining the big picture or the metanarrative (grand narrative). You’ll consequently be familiar with the Bible from cover to cover.

However, to get a deeper understanding, you’ll need to do an in-depth study of the Bible’s books. And here is a resource that can help you with this (How to Study the Bible Effectively).

Cover-to-cover (Chronological or Canonical) Reading Plan

Therefore, in order to read the Bible with consistency, your best bet would be to read the Bible cover to cover. Meaning that the cover-to-cover (chronological or canonical) reading plan is the best approach to reading the Bible in one year.

Given that the Bible is made up of 1,189 chapters (929 in the Old Testament and 260 in the New Testament), reading 3 to 4 chapters per day (3 and 1/4 to be exact, for about 12 minutes) should enable you to achieve this.

The two downsides to the chronological plan are that you may get bogged down in the historical sections and you won’t get to the New Testament till about October. But this should not be a deal breaker.

Remember, when you read the Bible chronologically, you will familiarize yourself with its grand narrative. There’s nothing more important than being familiar with God’s dealings with mankind since creation.

Below is the Chronological Reading Plan.

Arranged Readings

Regardless, the beauty of following a reading plan is that your reading is arranged for you. This means that you will be able to cover the Bible in a set time (that is one year).

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV)

The 5 Days a Week Format

The one-year plan is usually a 7 days a week format. But the 5 days a week format is a variation of the 7 days a week format.

It gives you flexibility on the weekly readings so that you have time for your weekend activities and don’t fall behind. But this means that you’ll have to do more than the normal daily reading.

All in all, the time you spend in the Bible is not wasted. Your love for the Word of God will enable you to love God more.
