Luke 2:36-38 ESV
Luke 2:36-38: 36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Introduction
One of the most comforting truths in Scripture is that God fulfills His promises. What He speaks, He brings to pass. Yet the journey from promise to fulfillment is rarely immediate. Most often, it involves a season of waiting.
Many people claim promises from God. Others receive promises directly from Him—like Simeon, who was assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ (Luke 2:25-35). Yet the real challenge is not in claiming or even receiving a promise. The true challenge is waiting for its fulfillment.
Waiting can test faith, patience, and devotion. But Luke 2:36-38 introduces us to someone who waited well. Anna, a prophetess who lived during the time of Jesus’ birth, teaches us what it means to remain faithful while waiting for God to fulfill His promises.

Waiting Can Be Long, But God Does Not Forget
Anna had experienced great loss early in life. After only seven years of marriage, she became a widow. Scripture tells us that she lived as a widow for many years, eventually reaching the age of eighty-four.
This means that much of her life was marked by waiting. Yet despite the length of time, Anna did not lose hope in God.
The promise of the Messiah had been spoken centuries earlier through the prophets. Many people in Israel had grown weary of waiting. But Anna remained expectant.
Her story reminds us that God’s delay is not God’s forgetfulness. The passage of time does not erase His promises.
What God has spoken, He will fulfill.

Waiting Should Deepen Our Devotion
Luke tells us something remarkable about Anna:
“She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.”
Anna did not allow the long years of waiting to weaken her relationship with God. Instead, her waiting strengthened her devotion.
She remained committed to worship, prayer, and seeking the Lord.
Often, when people wait too long for something they desire, they slowly drift away from God. But Anna demonstrates the opposite response. Waiting should draw us closer to God, not push us away from Him.
The waiting season can become a time when our faith grows deeper, and our dependence on God becomes stronger.

Faithful Waiting Leads to Fulfillment
Additionally, Luke records a beautiful moment:
“And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God…”
After years of devotion and expectation, Anna encountered the child Jesus. She witnessed the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel.
This was not a coincidence. It was divine timing.
Because Anna remained faithful, she did not miss the moment when God’s promise was fulfilled.
Her response was immediate gratitude and testimony. She gave thanks to God and spoke about Jesus to others who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Faithful waiting prepared her not only to see fulfillment but also to celebrate and proclaim it.
Reflection
Waiting for God can sometimes feel difficult. We may wonder if our prayers have been heard or if the promises we hold onto will ever come to pass.
Anna’s life reminds us that waiting is not wasted time. It is a season where faith is refined and devotion is strengthened.
When we remain faithful in worship, prayer, and trust, we position ourselves to recognize and rejoice in God’s fulfillment when it comes.
Like Anna, may we remain devoted to God while we wait.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being a God who fulfills every promise You make. Teach me to wait with faith and devotion, just as Anna did. When waiting feels long and difficult, strengthen my heart so that I remain close to You in worship and prayer. Help me trust Your timing and recognize Your fulfillment when it comes. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
