For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Psalm 30:5New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 30:5 Devotional

Rejoicing comes in the morning

Rejoicing comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5) since mornings should be moments of rejoicing because of God’s mercies (for you). And the Bible reveals that God’s mercies are new each morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Therefore, we can always look forward to the mornings because of God’s mercies that will be new then. And new mercies mean that each day will be disconnected from the previous one. That is the new day will not have the baggage of the previous day.

Even when God is angry at you because of sin, His discipline will surely last for a short while (Hebrews 12:6). And when He allows you to be afflicted, this too will be for a short while.

The Resurrection

Therefore, verse 5 of the 30th Psalm offers insight into the promise of Jesus’ resurrection and renewal. This is what enables you and me to experience joy in the morning, after our darkest nights.

God delivered David from his enemies including Saul. Therefore, after ascending to the throne, David had grown complacent and spiritually lax.

In other words, during the season of peace and prosperity, David had grown self-assured and satisfied. Complacency and spiritual laxness had set in.

But God intervened, challenging him to return to his devotion to Him. God pushed David to restore his devotional discipline.

Therefore, God humbled His servant and allowed him to be tested as a means of growing and strengthening him. And God caused His servant to grow and increase in strength.

God’s anger is for a moment

Consequently, in the midst of his personal struggle, when things seemed darkest and most uncertain, David understood that “God’s anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; weeping lasts for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning”.

Therefore, do not lose hope in the midst of God’s discipline or God-allowed affliction. But ask God for wisdom to successfully endure and improve (learn).

Prayer/Blessing

Lord, I exalt You for availing new mercies each morning. Teach me how to hold onto You and hope in the midst of discipline and affliction. Let me understand the humbling of His servant and allowing him to be tested as a means of growing and strengthening him. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Rejoice! For your morning has come. Amen.
