Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Believing without seeing is blessed

In John 20:29, Jesus stated that ‘believing without seeing is blessed‘  (1 Peter 1:8). Of course, most people hold that ‘seeing is believing.

Jesus’ statement is in response to Thomas’ attitude. Thomas could only accept what he could see and touch.

When the disciples told Thomas that Jesus had risen, he didn’t believe them. His response to them literally translates to “I will never believe”. Thus, he doubted their report.

He therefore later asked for more than what was offered to the other disciples (Jesus had shown the other disciples His hands and side, and they had rejoiced and believed at the sight). Thomas wanted to both see and feel so as to believe that Jesus had risen.

All in all, Thomas was reprimanded and rebuked. First, for doubting the word of his fellow disciples whom he had lived and walked with for 3 years. Second, for insisting on proof showing that Jesus was really alive.

Therefore, believing without seeing is believing in the testimony of the Bible. But if you demand a sign or scientific proof before you believe, then you’ll become a doubting Thomas. A doubter (unbeliever) just like Thomas.

In addition, believing without seeing is the greatest form of faith in the person and work (ministry) of Christ. Seeing does not automatically translate to believing (John 5:37-38).

When your faith is not based on evidence, it is commendable. It implies that you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose on the third day for your salvation (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Prayer

Lord, help my faith! Help me not to doubt what is written in Scripture. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Blessing

May you continue to believe in the person and work of Christ for you. Amen.
