”She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:21New International Version (NIV)
Matthew 1:21 Devotional
Jesus saves His people from their sins
Matthew 1:21 states that Jesus was born to save His people from their sins. Therefore, Jesus saves His people from their sins.
This implies that the Christmas story is not primarily about the birth of a baby boy who grew up to become a great moral teacher and example. Rather, it is the amazing story of the birth of the Savior of the world (John 3:16-17). Albeit, Jesus did become a great teacher and example.
Therefore, the angel explained to Mary that she was with the child by the Holy Spirit. He also told Joseph that “she will bear a Son; and they shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who would save His people from their sins”.
The Hebrew name Jesus (or Joshua) means “Jehovah is salvation.” Meaning that His name complimented His divine purpose.
Consequently, the Bible states that Jesus came “to save His people from their sins.” This is because His people were helpless and hopelessly lost in their sins. They were thus alienated (separated) from God, under His righteous judgment, and unable to free themselves from this state.
Therefore, a Saviour, one with the power to rescue people who could not save themselves was needed. And Jesus was God’s Saviour, who had the God-given power to save His people from their sins.
Salvation is not for someone who needs just a little help. It is for someone who is unable to do anything to save himself/herself. Thus, Jesus Christ came to save His people from their sins. He took on human flesh to achieve the salvation of His people from their sins.
So if you do not know Jesus as your Savior, then you need to asap!
