If God Is for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?
Paul’s words in Romans 8:31 come at the climax of a chapter filled with assurance for believers. From the promise that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (v.1) to the Spirit helping us in our weakness (v.26), Paul builds a case for why believers can live boldly in the face of hardship.
When Paul says, “If God is for us,” he is not questioning God’s support—he’s stating it as a reality. The Greek structure here assumes the truth of the statement. God has already proven He is for us by not sparing His own Son (v.32). With such a divine backing, opposition becomes inconsequential in comparison.
That doesn’t mean life will be free from challenges, but it does mean we face them from a place of victory, not defeat. No person, no situation, no spiritual force can ultimately prevail against those who are upheld by God Himself.
A Personal Note
I remember facing a difficult season when everything seemed stacked against me—finances, health challenges, and ministry burnout. But one night, as I read Romans 8, this verse hit me afresh. I realized that my outlook had been shaped more by my problems than by God’s promises.
That was the turning point. I, therefore, began speaking this truth daily, and my heart found peace and power in the reminder: God is for me.
Reflection
Romans 8:31 invites us to stop measuring life by who or what is against us and start living in the reality of who is for us—God. This changes everything. Your confidence doesn’t rest in circumstances but in the character and presence of the Almighty.
