”For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”
Deuteronomy 20:4New International Version (NIV)
Deuteronomy 20:4 Devotional
He goes with you to fight for you
“He goes with you to fight for you” from Deuteronomy 20:4, is a devotion acknowledging that you and I are victorious in God. And this is with respect to our pursuit of His promises and inheritance for us.
Moreover, you and I, just like the Israelites, do not live in a vacuum. Both friends and enemies surround us, and therefore, conflicts are unavoidable. And it’s, therefore, no wonder that in Deuteronomy 20, Moses gave the Israelites instructions on how to handle conflicts with their neighbors.
Consequently, Moses instructed God’s people that their battles towards the possession of the land promised to them by Him were in His hands. And no wonder the first verse of Deuteronomy 20 addresses the subject of fear – the Israelites were commanded not to fear their enemies who opposed them on their conquest of the Promised Land.
Additionally, the apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6, informs us that we live under the influence of the spiritual realm. Therefore, the men that oppose us from possessing God’s promises for us, do so under the influence of evil spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12).
God will grant us victory
Nevertheless, God promised to be with us in the battles, fight for us, and grant us victory (Deuteronomy 20:4). And God’s promises to us are yes and amen in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Therefore, God will fight for us to grant us victory. And it will not matter how armed (charioted) our enemies will be, God will triumph over them. It will be similar to what God did to the Egyptian army as recorded in Exodus 14:26-31.
Moreover, Isaiah 43:2 reveals that “Even when times are rough and you are in ‘deep waters’, God will be right by your side, leading and guiding you through your worst”. And it is actually the assurance of God’s presence that should help us to overcome the fear of our enemies.
But if we entertain the fear of our enemies, we will be paralyzed. We will never take possession of God’s promises for us.
God will fight for us
Consequently, the author of today’s verse reminds us that the Lord goes with us to fight for us against our enemies. Whoever or whatever that may be, God not only fights for us, but He also gives us victory. He is in full control of everything about us.
Therefore, we always start from and operate from the point of victory. He is present with us in every situation, to fight for us. Whatever battle you may face, be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual, God is with you and will fight for you. From the smallest to the biggest battle, God will defend you and protect you.
God easily overcomes that which feels or looks impossible to us. And when you love and trust in Him, you may call upon Him in their time of need.
Therefore, every time you start struggling with feelings of loss and defeat, remind yourself of God’s victory for you. Particularly for you and me who are under the new covenant. Jesus overcame for us.
In fact, He made a public spectacle of all our enemies. Meaning that no matter what you are going through, remember “God goes with you to fight for you” in your daily battles.
Prayer/Blessing
Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory You won for me in Jesus Christ. No enemy can stand before me. And this is my heritage in Jesus Christ, Amen.
