Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32New International Version (NIV)

Ephesians 4:32 Devotional

Be kind to one another

Being kind to one another (Ephesians 4:32) goes against the pattern of this world which promotes the contrary – unkindness. For example, sometimes when I am wronged, I am tempted to be mean to that person. And this is because I will be hurt.

But as a Christian, that is not the way you and I ought to react. We are commanded to be kind, gentle, and forgiving to such a person.

In as much as showing kindness to someone that has wronged/hurt you and me is hard, it has to be done. And by God’s grace, we can do it. We can be genuinely kind, gentle, and forgiving.

However, if we are to be led by our hearts, then we’ll affirm the existing culture. Jeremiah 17:9a accurately reveals that “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure”. Thereafter, Jeremiah 17:9b asks: “Who can understand it?”

Therefore, we are to be kind to others God is always kind to us. We are to forgive others because Jesus forgave us first. When we were not asking, or deserving of forgiveness, Christ paid the price to have us forgiven (by God) anyway.

Besides, you can’t dictate or change how someone treats you. But you can choose to respond to them with kindness, gentleness, and forgiveness. You can also choose to act towards all people with kindness, gentleness, and forgiveness.

So if there’s anyone you are yet to forgive, go and face this person and speak forgiveness to them with as much gentleness as you can muster through the power that is given us through Jesus.

Prayer

Lord, please forgive me for not being kind to others. Help me be kind as You are. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Blessing

Treating others with kindness is a conscious choice we must pursue, even as Christ forgave us. May God help you in this virtue. Amen.
