Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9New International Version (NIV)

Galatians 6:9 Devotional

Do not become weary in doing good

Do not weary in doing good” (Galatians 6:9) because that is what the enemy desires for you. Actually, he desires that you may grow tired of doing good. Because doing good involves submitting to the Spirit of Christ so that He may produce His fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in us.

Oftentimes, it is difficult not to grow weary in doing good. But God does not want us to grow weary in doing good. He wants us to continue to do good at all times, irrespective of the evil done to us.

God is a promise-maker and a promise-keeper

Consequently, God makes a promise to all believers that if they stay strong and continue to do good, they will reap a harvest at the proper time. Consequently, Paul uses agricultural imagery to teach us the principle of sowing and reaping.

Paul, therefore, emphasizes that only a farmer who has sown should expect a harvest – and the one who hasn’t sown shouldn’t. And this is because God doesn’t miss every good act of yours.

Additionally, God also established the law of sowing and harvesting, which He has no option but to faithfully honor. In fact, His word in the latter part of Psalm 138:2 says that “God has so exalted His solemn decree that it surpasses His fame.”

Therefore, God’s Word and His authority are exalted above all creation. And God is unlike our earthly, sinful rulers who use their authority to break the rules and go against even what they themselves had promised. He exalts His Word above His authority and lives by His own rules.

God is just and loving

Moreover, Hebrews 6:10 which tells us, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them” confirms this. And this is because God is just.

Therefore, we can expect God to live by His own rules and keeps His promises because He is just and loving. Consequently, we can trust Him, that at the proper time, we shall reap the harvest of doing good. And indeed, the Wiseman, in Ecclesiastes 3:1, reckoned that “there is a time for everything.”

So there will come a time for reaping (Galatians 6:9). And we can count on God to handsomely reward us then.

To weary is human

But you may get weary because you are human. And when that happens, you can turn to God. He will uplift you up with His mighty hand (Isaiah 41:10).

After all, when you are doing good, you are working for the Lord. It is the Lord Jesus Christ that you will be serving (Colossians 3:23).

Additionally, when you do good, you will be following the example of our Lord Jesus. He went around doing good (Acts 10:38). And we who are His followers are to follow in His example.

Therefore, do good continually, extensively, and expectantly! It is by our good works, that the world will be drawn to Jesus.

Prayer/Blessing

Lord God, please renew my strength so that I may continue to do good. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
