”For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

The Word of God
Hebrews 4:12 declares that the Word of God is alive and active (Psalm 119:10-19). That is, the Bible is living and effective. For God uses His word to cause change and separation where He applies the same. That’s why the author of the letter to the Hebrews uses the image of a double-edged sword to describe how God’s word ministers to us.
From the very beginning, God’s word was spoken. And God’s spoken word was/is creational (Genesis 1). For through God’s word, the world and everything in it were created.
Consequently, in these last days, God’s word was also spoken. Hebrews 1:2 reveals that Jesus Christ spoke God’s word in these last days.
Remember, God created the universe through Jesus (Hebrews 1:2). And in these last days, God had appointed Jesus heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2). Jesus is sustaining all these things through the word (Hebrews 1:3).
In Hebrews 2:1-3, the word of God is gospel-focused. That is, salvational. And in Hebrews 3:7-8, God’s word is proclamation-natured. It therefore convicts.
Therefore, as a double-edged blade, God’s word is also able to cut our hearts and expose the sin residing therein. And in so doing, God’s word is able to transform a person from a non-believer to a believer courtesy of faith (Romans 10:17). It all starts with His word exposing our sin and God’s judgment against it.
Ultimately, God’s word is also a timeless standard of righteousness. You only have to obey and apply the word of God. And this is because God is always committed to fulfilling the promises that are contained in His Word (Psalm 138:2, Numbers 23:19, and Isaiah 55:10-11).
