But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Peace and healing

Isaiah 53:5 ends by stating that Jesus’ punishment and subsequent wounds brought you and me peace and healing respectively. And indeed, the crucifixion that Jesus underwent was gruesome and painful.

Jesus Christ was pierced for our transgressions

Furthermore, the phrase “Jesus Christ was pierced for our transgressions” implies that Jesus Christ suffered severe injuries or wounds or borings (stabs) for our rebellion against God. And the apostle John, in chapter 19, verse 34 recorded that, one of the Roman soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear (Zechariah 12:10).

Jesus Christ was crushed for our iniquities

Additionally, the phrase “Jesus Christ was crushed for our iniquities” implies that Jesus was bruised for our sins, which is going astray (crookedness, unjustness, or perverseness).

Jesus Christ was to suffer

Therefore, Jesus Christ was born to suffer. And this is according to Isaiah’s words in Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12, where he wrote that “God’s servant was to suffer great pain for God’s people”.

But it was not to suffer as a consequence of His rebellion or going astray – He always obeyed His Father’s will (John 5:19 and 6:38). Yet many thought/assumed and have continued to think/assume that He had done something wrong for Him to suffer the way He did (Isaiah 53:4). And yet, God made Jesus Christ suffer for our sake.

The Great Exchange

Consequently, Jesus received the punishment for our rebellion and sins, and we in return received the blessing of His righteousness, which is the righteousness of God (Jesus Christ was fully human and fully God). This is what is dubbed the Great Exchange or substitutionary atonement (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Therefore, on the day that Jesus Christ died in our place, Calvary was similar to the Stock Exchange. That is, it was the place where a great trade took place (thus, it can be referred to as the Calvary Exchange).

Peace and Healing

Moreover, Jesus Christ’s sacrifice enabled us to receive the blessings of peace and healing. This is because we were reconciled to God (Romans 5:10) and we have the opportunity to be righteous before God and live righteously.

Remember that sin separates us from God. And therefore Jesus’ sacrifice provided the platform for us to be reconciled to God. Consequently, when you are in Christ, you are not under condemnation (Romans 8:1).

Additionally, when the apostle Peter quoted Isaiah 53:5, he did it in the context of our dying to sins and living for righteousness. And this is made possible by the fact that Jesus bore our sins on the cross that He was nailed on, therefore, the healing we have in God (Romans 6:23).

Therefore, we are no longer held captive by sin. Jesus’ suffering broke the power of sin.

One in Christ

Finally, Jesus’ suffering united the Gentiles with the Jews so that they became one in Christ. And the apostle Paul put it to the believers in Ephesus that “the Gentiles who were once far off, had been brought near by the blood of Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 2:13).

Therefore, Paul added, that “Jesus Christ is the peace of the Jews and Gentiles, because made them one and broke down the division that existed between the two” (Ephesians 2:14).

Prayer/Blessing

Father in Heaven, You are holy. Therefore, You could not come near us because of our sin.

But You sent Christ, who was fully man and fully God, to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. Therefore, Christ satisfied Your just wrath by taking the punishment we deserved.

Heavenly Father, I praise you for making a way for me and honor you by accepting Your free gift of salvation. Help me not to cheapen Your grace and mercy or take it for granted.

Shed light on my sin, and help me to be specific about the same so that I can repent of it. Help me to hate sin every day and to obey and glorify You.

In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
