Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:34 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)

Do not worry about tomorrow

Matthew, in Matthew 6:34, recorded the command “Do not worry about tomorrow” for you and me. This is because tomorrow will have enough trouble of its own, just as today has enough trouble of its own.

Each day has its own trouble

There will, therefore, always be something to worry about since each day has its own troubles. And this is why Jesus commanded you to be present in the here and now.

Jesus, therefore, wants you to focus on the things of today. He wants you to fully immerse yourself in the present. Because if you focus on the things of today and tomorrow, you will be partially immersed in the present.

Worrying about tomorrow

In fact, worrying about tomorrow (Matthew 6:34) and its things will steal your joy and strength today. And you cannot also solve tomorrow’s “problems” because they’ve not manifested and you have today’s problems to deal with.

Solomon moreover states that you “Should not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring” (Proverbs 27:1). And James in chapter 4 of his letter, verses 14 to 16, wrote in another perspective: Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money” (13). Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (14) Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (15). As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. (16)

Your worrying about tomorrow will make you miss today’s blessings. This is because troubles have a way of blinding you from God’s blessings of today.

God will provide for you

Earlier, in Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus Christ has already commanded you not to worry about your daily needs because He will provide for you. After all, He is your sole Provider.

When you, therefore, worry about tomorrow, you manifest your lack of faith in God. You become an unbeliever because worry is the opposite of faith. Therefore, you cannot have faith if you are worried because fear replaces your faith. But living out today is godly because you can’t figure out tomorrow.

Matthew 6:11, in addition, reads: “Give us today our daily bread”, indicating that God wants you and me to live and depend on Him on a daily basis. Lamentations 3:22-23 says: “22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”, effectively affirming that God’s mercy is a daily provision. And God’s act of providing the Israelites with manna on a daily basis (Exodus 16:12) further affirms that God wants you to depend on Him on a daily basis. No wonder the manna that was preserved for use the following day went bad.

Live a-day-at-a-time in God

Essentially, God wants you to live a-day-at-a-time in Him. He wants you to live in the day, not out of it.

Prayer/Blessing

Father, many are the times I become exhausted, weary, and overwhelmed with worry, stress, and anxiety for the future. But I do not want to worry or be anxious about tomorrow. I want to place my trust in You entirely each and everyday.

Please help me to remember that in times of need You have always been faithful to provide. Help me to remember that Your plans are meant to prosper me, and never to harm me. You are so good to me, and I find peace and hope in knowing You will never abandon me.

Father, teach me to meet each day’s troubles as they come with grace, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. I know Your grace is sufficient and You will help me to overcome whatever this life may bring my way. There is, therefore, no need to worry about tomorrow, I know You will meet me there.

I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
