”I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:14 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)
I Press On Toward the Goal
“I Press On Toward the Goal” (Philippians 3:14), was Apostle Paul’s reminder to the Philippians, to press on toward the goal of winning the prize in Christ (Philippians 3:8-10). He, therefore, used the analogy of a race to show them that they were to constantly strive toward the goal of Christ.
Paul’s Letter to the Philippians
Paul’s letter to the Philippians (believers in Philippi) was partly in response to the gift they’d sent him earlier. He, therefore, used the opportunity accorded by his letter to them to explain to them that he had not arrived at the goal (his destination) yet.
No wonder he informed them that he was pressing on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus had taken hold for him (Philippians 3:12). Therefore, he, like an Olympic athlete, exerted absolute determination to attain Christian maturity (the image of Christ). And for the remainder of his life on earth, Paul was resolutely committed to the passionate pursuit of this singular ambition (goal).
Pursue Christian maturity
Consequently, you too have to pursue Christian maturity that is in Christ. Because all your pursuit(s) should be anchored on what Christ has done for you.
Therefore, when you place any value or worth in your works or accomplishments like the Jews did on circumcision, know that the same cannot substitute for Christ and the righteousness and purpose (Philippians 3:11-12) that come only through Him.
Consequently, you have to get your priorities right (Philippians 3:8) and trust in Christ’s ability (Philippians 3:9) to clinch the prize. This is the only thing that matters in life – to know Christ and be like Him.
Sanctification
You have to focus on your sanctification (Philippians 3:12), and not dwell on the past (successes or glories and failures – Philippians 3:13) as this will also be helpful. You will, therefore, be able to run and finish your race successfully/victoriously.
Moreover, when an athlete runs, he/she must keep sight of the finish line and prize (the end or goal). Therefore, there is no looking back (to failures or successes).
Critical success factors
The critical success factors that you need to embrace in your running are:
- maximum effort (1 Timothy 6:12 and Hebrews 12:1-2),
- focused concentration (that is, forget the past and focus on the goal or prize), and
- motivation (the prize or goal).
Prayer/Blessing
May God enable you to press on toward the goal that He has set ahead of you. Amen.
