Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Proverbs 16:3New International Version (NIV)

Proverbs 16:3 Devotional

Commit to the Lord whatever you do

Proverbs 16:3 advises that you “Commit to the Lord whatever you do“, and He will establish your plans. In others, when you roll over your plans/intentions to God, He will set them up permanently – the Hebew verb for “commit” is a word that literally means “to roll.”

Therefore, the point is that we give our plans/intentions over to God entirely so that we can from then on depend on Him for their establishment. That is, we offer everything we do completely to Him, be they small or big.

Moreover, everyone makes plans. The plans could be on a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly basis.

Giving up control is hard

But only a few people commit their plans to God because giving up control is hard for them. Yet God is able to set up and bless our plans more than we could ever have asked or even imagined (Ephesians 3:20).

Therefore, in as much as giving up control is hard, you need to let go and let God do it for you. Because most often than not, our plans don’t work out the way we imagined them. This leaves us with failed goals and broken dreams, which is the hotbed of disappointment.

God is all-knowing and powerful

But not so with God! Nothing surprises Him. The future is in His knowledge because He is all-knowing.

Additionally, God is powerful. Therefore, there is nothing He cannot do for you, especially with the plans you commit to Him.

Therefore, when you submit your plans to God, He knows exactly what’s going to happen in the future. And He is also able to align your plans with His perfect will for your life. That’s why He can establish plans for you far more than you would have.

How to commit your plans to God

But how will you commit your plans to God? Especially since God is Spirit (John 4:24), and therefore, we have to relate with Him in a spiritual manner.

Fortunately, prayer is the basic means by which we can interact or transact with God. It is the means to communicate with, confide in and consult God. And anybody can pray.

Therefore, through prayer, we can commit our plans to God. And because God is a good Father and a faithful God, He will answer our prayers.

Consequently, when God answers our prayers, we will have the opportunity to refine them to His will. And God’s Word and His Spirit are available to us to help you and me pray effectively – that is, according to His will.

Commit all your plans to God

Finally, your plans need not be “right”. You just need to commit them to God who will in turn establish them. And the best ways to do this are: to confide in and consult God (Isaiah 30:1–2a and Proverbs 15:33a).

Additionally, be open to God’s way of establishing your plans. Understand that things may not turn out the way you expect them to. And this is because most often the plans (dreams) we have for our lives or the direction we want to go in is not what God wants for us.

So plan ahead, commit the same to God as per Proverbs 16:3, and He will establish your plans.

Prayer/Blessing

Father in Heaven, I’m grateful that I can commit my plans to you. That’s why I commit my plans to you right now. May You establish them according to Your will. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
