Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Psalm 139:23New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 139:23 Devotional

Search me, God

Search me, God“, from Psalm 139:23 is based on King David’s prayer and an invitation to God to search (examine) him again and know him. He wanted God to look into his inner person and reveal to him his sins, weaknesses, or defects.

Moreover, Psalm 139 is about David’s relationship with God. It is one long prayer made by David to God, where David focuses on his relationship with God. And the depth of his relationship with God clearly comes out.

In verses 1 to 18, David says that God knows him fully. God knew his heart and thoughts. He therefore cannot hide from God.

And in verses 19 to 22, David makes his commitment to God clear. Consequently, he states that he hates evildoers.

David didn’t want to take any chances in his relationship with God. He appreciated that his relationship with God had to be righteous. And it’s, therefore, no wonder that he didn’t mind inviting God to examine him again.

Similarly, you too can invite our all-knowing God to bring your wayward ways to light. This is how God will correct you and your issues so you can effectively walk in His paths of righteousness.

It will definitely take lots of courage. Because most often than not, we prefer to keep our issues private. Yet some of these issues include unconfessed sins and unresolved conflicts. But before God can lead us, He has to highlight our problem areas.

Therefore, correction and training in righteousness is the way to grow (2 Timothy 3:16). It is how God leads us along His paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3b).

Prayer/Blessing

Lord, I invite You to thoroughly search me so that I can get to know my shortcomings. Thereafter, lead me in your righteous paths. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

May you invite God to search you and reveal your heart to you. Amen.
