Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord.

Psalm 150:6New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 150:6 Devotional

Let Everything That Has Breath Praise the Lord!

Psalm 150:6 rings out with a simple yet profound command: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!” And this isn’t a suggestion; it’s a declaration. It’s an invitation to every living being to participate in the ultimate purpose of existence: praising God.

Additionally, Psalm 150 is a powerful crescendo, a grand finale to the book of Psalms. It’s a symphony of praise, urging every instrument and every voice to join in the adoration of God. And the heart of it is Psalm 150:6.

Everything that has breath

The phrase “Let everything that has breath…” encompasses all of creation. From the smallest insect to the largest whale, from the rustling leaves to the roaring wind, all of life is meant to reflect God’s glory.

But it especially speaks to us, humans, endowed with the capacity for conscious, intentional praise. Our breath, the very essence of life, is a constant reminder of God’s gift. Each inhale and exhale can become an act of or opportunity for worship, and verse 5 gives us a glimpse: of His mighty acts, for His surpassing greatness, and His holy name.

We therefore praise Him not out of obligation, but out of gratitude, awe, and love.

Praise the Lord

Praise isn’t limited to singing in church or reciting scripted prayers. It can be found in the quiet moments of contemplation, in the joyful celebration of life’s blessings, and even in the midst of trials. It’s recognizing God’s hand in every aspect of our lives and responding with hearts full of adoration and thanksgiving.

Moreover, the phrase “Praise the Lord” (Hallelujah) is a call to action. It’s a reminder that praise is not passive. It’s an active engagement with God, a conscious choice to acknowledge His sovereignty and goodness.

Reflection

Take a moment to consider your breath. Are you using it to praise God? Are you consciously aware of His presence in your life? Do you allow the daily rhythms of life to drown out the call to worship?

Consider the various ways you can express praise. It might be through music, prayer, acts of service, or simply appreciating the beauty of creation. The key is to make it a genuine expression of your heart.

Think about the things that often steal your focus away from God. What distractions keep you from praising Him? How can you redirect your attention back to the One who gave you life?

Prayer/Blessing

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of breath, the very essence of life. We acknowledge Your greatness and Your mighty acts. Help us to use our breath, our voices, and our lives to bring You glory. Forgive us for the times we have taken Your blessings for granted and allowed distractions to steal our focus. Teach us to praise You in every moment, in every circumstance. May our lives be a constant symphony of praise to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Call to Action

Today, make a conscious effort to praise God throughout your day. Whether it’s through a song, a prayer, or a simple acknowledgment of His presence, let your breath be a testament to His glory.

  1. Take a moment to thank God for something specific.
  2. Find a song of praise and sing along to it.
  3. Write down a list of things you are grateful for.
  4. Share a word of encouragement with someone else, reflecting God’s love.
  5. When you take a deep breath, say “Thank you, Lord.”

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
