May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 19:14New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 19:14 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord

In Psalm 19:14, David concluded his Psalm with the words “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord“. And David’s words expressed his hope that God would find his speech and meditations pleasing.

Context

But your consideration and indulgence of David’s context of verse 14 will enable you to appreciate and understand his words in the same verse. Because context is important in unearthing David’s real intent in verse 14.

David commenced his Psalm with the words “The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1). And in doing so, David expressed his conviction that God’s creation voiced His glory and might.

Romans 1:19-21

The apostle Paul, in Romans 1:19-21, stated that “what may be known about God was plain to them because He had made it plain to them” (verse 19). And this is because “God had made it plain to them since the creation of the world His invisible qualities, that is, eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen in creation” (verses 19 to 20). Therefore, Paul concluded that “even though they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him” (verse 21).

Paul consequently agrees with David on the impact that creation should have on men, you included. You should, therefore, be able to perceive God’s glory and might in His creation.

God’s law

King David moreover didn’t end there. He proceeded to comment on God’s law with the words “God’s law is perfect, refreshing to the soul” in the middle of his Psalm(Psalm 19:7a). Because it “warns God’s servants, thus, enabling them to receive a great reward” (verse 11).

God’s servant cannot discern his own errors without God’s law (verse 12a). No wonder Paul revealed that “the law makes you conscious of sin” (Romans 3:20). And in Galatians 3:19-26, Paul further revealed that the law exists to “highlight your need for a savior”, thus, the means of forgiveness (Psalm 19:12b).

The Lord’s law also keeps His servant from willful sins so that they won’t rule over him/her, thus, making him/her blameless and innocent of transgression (Psalm 19:13).

Perception of God

Now, having gleaned through the context of Psalm 19:14, you ought to realize that David hoped that his expression of the perception of God’s glory, might, and salvation/redemption would please Him. Because a psalm is generally an outpouring of the words that were contained in the Psalmist’s heart.

These are the words that the Psalmists expressed as they sought and appreciated God. They, thus, bore witness to the meditations of their hearts with their words.

You too should be encouraged to express the meditations of your heart to God. And God’s creation and His Word are the foundations of framing your expressions to Him. These are the expressions that will glorify God, thus, be pleasing to Him.

Prayer/Blessing

Lord God, unless You reveal yourself to me, I cannot perceive who You are. So may You reveal Yourself to me so that I may express Your revelations to You. Therefore, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock, and my Redeemer. And this is my humble request in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
