The LORD is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 27:1 Devotional

The LORD is my light and my salvation and the stronghold of my life

In Psalm 27:1, David penned the words “The LORD is my light and my salvation and the stronghold of my life” at a time when he was distressed. He penned these words to reaffirm his faith in God. And he also strengthened himself with this faith in God.

Therefore, in this verse, David asks two questions that both involve fear. Nevertheless, they are rhetorical questions.

But David aimed for an impact on his audience. He wants you and me to gain bold confidence in God, especially in the face of threat and danger.

Therefore, because of having trusted God, David is better placed to help you and me trust God. Remember, David had experienced God’s power and faithfulness first-hand on many occasions. He, therefore, knows that God is faithful toward those whose hearts are fully devoted to him (2 Chronicles 16:9).

Additionally, God had helped David slay the lion that had threatened his sheep (1 Samuel 17:37). God had also helped him slay the giant who had defied God’s people. David, therefore, feared no one and nothing because of his trust in God.

God is light

Therefore, David proclaimed that the Lord was his light. For the Lord had guided him in all situations, especially the fearful ones.

God is salvation

David also proclaimed that God was his salvation.  That is, God was his protection, therefore, his protector.

God is strength

Finally, David confessed that the Lord was his strength. That God was his fortress, therefore, his ultimate protection. And nobody and no one was able to reach and harm him in any way.

Therefore, I pray that like King David, God may be your light, salvation, and stronghold. Despite David finding himself in trouble after trouble, he put his hope in God. He knew that God was everything he needed in every situation. Consequently, God was able to guide, deliver, and strengthen him.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for being everything I need and will ever need. I choose to rest my hope in You. Therefore, I will fear no one or nothing in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Blessing

Whatever situation you are in, may God be your light, salvation, and stronghold too.
