Psalm 34:1 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)
I will extol the Lord at all times
Psalm 34:1, themed “I will extol the Lord at all times“, is the first verse of this Hymn of Thanksgiving by King David. For it was normal for David to sing such kinds of hymns to give thanks to God for delivering him from life-threatening situations.
1 Samuel 21:10-22:1
Moreover, the superscription of this Psalm places it to the time when David “feigned madness before Abimelech (1 Samuel 21:10-22:1). Therefore, Abimelech drove him out from his presence and he escaped.
Additionally, 1 Samuel 21:10-22:1 is the only place in the Bible where such an incident is recorded. But it is a record of King Achish, which means that Abimelech was most likely the title that was given to the Philistine King.
Nevertheless, in 1 Samuel 21:10-22:1, David fled from Saul and went to Achish, the King of Gath for protection – Gath was one of the chief cities of the Philistines. But Achish’s servants (men) accused David of being a great warrior in his presence.
Consequently, David acted like a mad (crazy or insane) man in order to save his life. And indeed, Achish asked his servants why they had brought David to him.
Further, Achish asked his men if such a man could go into his house. And therefore, David got an opportunity to depart from Achish’s presence and escape to the cave of Adullam.
Extolling God
Therefore, in Psalm 34, David extolled (blessed) God for delivering him kings Saul and Achish. And in verses 4 and 6, David states the reasons for praising God as God’s deliverance from his fears and God’s salvation from his troubles respectively.
Additionally, in verse 7, David stated how God had delivered him. He stated that God delivered him by surrounding him with His angel (see also Psalm 91:11-12, Daniel 6:22, and Acts 12:1-17). And if God had not done so, David’s life would have been in danger.
Finally, you ought to extol God at all times. Praise Him no matter the circumstance (Ephesians 5:20 and 1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Prayer/Blessing
May you give God thanks today, for being Your deliverer and savior. Amen.
