”Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 34:8New International Version (NIV)
Psalm 34:8 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)
Taste and see that the Lord is good
Psalm 34:8 invites you to “Taste and see that the Lord is good“. Therefore, this verse is both an invitation to discover God’s goodness and assurance of the enjoyment of God’s goodness that comes with the same.
Moreover, David wrote Psalm 34 just after he pretended to be insane before Abimelek and escaped harm (1 Samuel 21:14-15, Psalm 34:1 and Psalm 34:4). He prayed to God for deliverance from Abimelek and God delivered him.
God is good
God was good to David
Therefore, God was good to David. Because he could have pretended to be insane and Abimelek would not have chased him away from his presence.
But because God made Abimelek chase David away from his presence, God was good to him. Because, most often than not, God’s intervention involves Him directing the hearts of men in your favor.
Additionally, David went on to outline examples of God’s incredible goodness to those who take refuge in Him. First, God takes care of their every need (verses 8–10). Second, He provides them with a good, long life (verses 11–15). And third, God is with them through troubles and saves them from their enemies (verses 17–22).
Consequently, when you try God, you will see that He is good and you will experience His provision.
God was good to Esther
Another classic example is Esther, who the Bible records as having “won favor in the eyes of all who saw her” (Esther 2:15b). Esther ended up experiencing success in all her undertakings in the palace.
Consequently, God was good to Esther. And He can be good to you. All you need to do is to try Him and experience His goodness in your life.
Unless you taste God, you will not know whether He is good or not. Because seeing only comes after tasting. And to taste and see that the Lord is good, you must trust God and seek Him as your sole source of protection and provision.
God was good to Apostle Peter’s audience
Later, the apostle Peter applied David’s concept in 1 Peter 2:3, where he said, “You have tasted that the Lord is good.” This is a further testimony that God is good.
Therefore, God’s goodness is a constant. He was good to those of the old, He is good to you today, and He will be good to those who will come after you.
Prayer/Blessing
Lord God, You are good. David tasted of Your goodness and proclaimed it to the world. He did not keep quiet.
Therefore, I trust You with my life and the issues related to it. And I know You will hear my prayers and answer them.
This is my prayer in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
