”I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
Psalm 37:25New International Version (NIV)
Psalm 37:25 Devotional
Never Forsaken
Psalm 37:25 declares that the righteous are never forsaken (abandoned or deserted). This is what the aged (experienced) king David keenly reflected on and boldly testified about.
Therefore, in David’s reflections on whether the righteous or unrighteous will enjoy the Promised Land, he contrasts the righteous with the wicked. Consequently, he instructs the righteous not to envy the seeming outward success or prosperity of the wicked. He reveals that they will be short-lived.
This Psalm, therefore, is about perseverance (patience) and ultimate fulfillment or justice. Ultimately, the righteous are heirs and victorious.
This is because God is faithful. His faithfulness is declared to you in Hebrews 13:5 (Deuteronomy 31:6) which says that He will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
Therefore, you only need to be patient in faith. Learn from David who although he faced many hardships (as recorded in 1 Samuel 16:10-12, 17:28-29, 34-35, 23:5, 23:12, 30, 2 Samuel 6:16, 11, 15-18, and 21:16), he still experienced and ended up testifying about God’s faithfulness. And it is this faithfulness of God, that David brings out in his Psalms, even this one.
In this verse, God puts it on record “that He will never leave nor forsake you”. That’s a promise or an assurance you can rely on.
Finally, ‘Never Forsaken’ also means that God is a faithful provider (Psalm 23:1 and John 6:35 & 48). He has proved to be so since the creation of the world. And He knows our needs before we bring them to His attention.
Therefore, whatever negative situation you’re in, remind yourself that God is faithful. He will not forsake you (through it all). God is good and God’s faithfulness is the constant in the believer’s life and that of his/her children.
Prayer/Blessing
God, indeed great is your faithfulness! You are a very faithful God. Help me patiently keep my faith in You and Your faithfulness, especially during the tough times. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
