I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.

Psalm 7:17New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 7:17 Devotional

Give thanks to the Lord because of His righteousness

Psalm 7:17 motivates the question: Have you ever thanked God for His righteousness? Further, have you ever thanked God for His righteousness with regard to your enemies and sin?

This is exactly what David did. He thanked God for His righteousness as he waited for His verdict regarding his prayers. David knew that he could rely on God’s righteousness. Because everything that God does is right.

Most of the time, we thank God for blessings already received from Him. But in this verse of Psalm, David shows us a different kind of thanksgiving prayer. He resolves to praise God in the face of false accusations, slander, and injustice.

Thus he says, “He will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness and he will sing praise to the Lord Most High”. This is because God’s righteousness includes abounding love (Psalm 86:5b), and comprises answers to our prayers (Isaiah 65:24), personal involvement (Isaiah 41:10), fulfillment of His plans for us (Psalm 33:4), bringing good out of evil (Genesis 50:20), and victory out of defeat (1 Corinthians 15:57).

God’s righteousness is coupled with grace and mercy. And He showers us with His righteousness all the time.

First, when He saves you, He gives you His righteousness. He gifts us His righteousness through Jesus Christ. And thereafter, He helps you and me to live in the right relationship with Himself and with others.

Therefore, you too, as you thank God in advance, can thank Him for His righteousness regarding your petition. He will surely respond righteously and give you another reason for thanksgiving.

Prayer/Blessing

Thank You, Lord, for Your righteousness. You’re righteous through and through. And everything you do is right.

I praise You in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
