”My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26New International Version (NIV)
Psalm 73:26 Devotional
God is the Strength of My Heart
In Psalm 73:26, the Psalmist insinuates that our hearts may fail when considering the prosperity of the wicked (Psalm 73:3). In fact, they may even seem to experience no struggles in their ways (Psalm 73:4). And they may be carefree (Psalm 73:12).
Moreso, Asaph’s heart failed because he couldn’t understand God’s ways (Psalm 73:21-22). As a servant in the temple, he wondered if following God was worth it.
Therefore, my guess is that as you look at your life and look at the lives of the wicked, you may be wondering why good things are happening to the wicked.
But Asaph later confessed that when your heart fails (in discernment), God is the strength of your heart. That is God is able to separate the truth from that which is not true for him. And He does this for us through His Spirit.
But before Asaph confessed, he “entered God’s sanctuary and understood the destiny of the wicked” (Psalm 73:17). That is, the rich in this life have no future.
Therefore, God is your strength. He will strengthen you. The power He provides can revitalize you (Isaiah 40:29-31).
In addition, God will not only strengthen you (Psalm 29:11), He will be your reliable Rock forever. He has promised to be with us forever (Hebrews 13:5).
Therefore, we can have comfort in knowing that God will be and is with us in our difficulties (Isaiah 41:10, Deuteronomy 31:6, and Matthew 28:20).
Prayer
Father, please help me to see and focus on eternal things. Help me not to focus on worldly things.
Your Word tells me that you are the Rock of my heart. And You are my portion forever.
This is my prayer in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Blessing
May you find strength in God. Amen.
