Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 91:1 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)

The Shelter of the Most High

In Psalm 91:1, Moses wrote: “Whoever dwells in ‘the shelter of the Most High‘ will rest in the shadow of the Almighty”. He, therefore, highlighted the dominant effect or benefit of dwelling in the shelter of the Lord God as resting in His shadow.

Intimacy with God

The Psalmist, therefore, coupled intimacy with God with resting in His shadow. He used the images of shelter and shadow to describe God’s intimate place and God’s protective care respectively. And he was able to point to a sense of security and confidence in God’s protection.

Psalm 91 is, therefore, a Psalm of trust and confidence in God’s protection and care for those who pursue closeness and fellowship with Him. Because to “rest in the shadow of the Almighty” is to dwell in His protective care – the image of God’s shadow communicates the idea of shelter and refuge.

The secret place is the place to dwell in

Another Psalmist, in Psalm 27:5 and 31:20, revealed that God has a secret place for His own, which is the place to dwell (live) in. And those who dwell there abide under the shadow of the Almighty, knowing and declaring His protection, comfort, and care (Psalm 91:2).

God is, therefore, the dwelling place of His people. He has the place for you to be close to Him and also fellowship with Him. And then, He becomes your fortress because He is able to protect you from all forms of danger.

Consider and commit to continue dwelling in God’s presence

I, therefore, want to invite you to consider and commit to continue dwelling in God’s presence. Because God is able to protect you from all forms of danger. And you can do this through the disciplines of prayer, meditation, and Bible Study.

Prayer for protection

In fact, you can use Psalm 91 as a prayer for protection. The prospect of God’s protection and care offer should offer you hope and encouragement in this world of chaos and uncertainty and in times of fear and distress.

Prayer/Blessing

Lord God, and my Father who is in Heaven, I thank You for being my dwelling place. I, therefore, know that I can rest in Your shadow. And I can say that “You are my refuge and fortress”.

Father, teach me to dwell in You even more because I don’t want to be out of Your shadow. This is my humble prayer in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
