May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13 Devotional (Daily Bible Verse)

The God of Hope

Romans 15:13, themed “The God of Hope“, is apostle Paul’s benediction in conclusion to his encouragement to the Romans (Gentiles) in Romans 15:7-12. And in this benediction, Paul depicted God as the source or giver of hope.

Moreover, Paul mentions the word hope in the book of Romans more than in any of his other letters (Romans 4:18, 5:1-5, 8:20-21, 12:12, 15:4, and 15:12). Therefore, hope is a significant theme in the book of Romans.

The God of joy and peace

Additionally, God is also the source of all joy and peace for those who trust in Him. And God’s joy and peace are to enable you to overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, the Romans (Gentiles) were to embrace God’s purpose and plan to unify them with the Jews. And they were to consequently have joy and peace because of God’s inclusive plan.

Consequently, they didn’t need to be discouraged, which is a sign of a lack of hope. But they needed to be encouraged. And this was Paul’s objective in this verse.

Jesus Christ is the source of your hope

Furthermore, the apostle Peter, in 1 Peter 1:3, wrote: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Joy and Peace are part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit

Finally, joy and peace are part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit as you walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 22). And peace is a product of God’s answer to your prayers offered in an environment of anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7).

Prayer/Blessing

May the God of Hope fill you with all the joy and peace as you trust in Him. And may you know the power of the Holy Spirit and therefore abound in hope in Him today! Amen.
