But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 Devotional

God demonstrated His love

“T he reality of Romans 5:8 is that “God demonstrated His love to all”. Therefore, while we were sinners, Christ died for you and me (1 John 4:9-10).

In other words, God’s love was demonstrated when “Christ died for us”. That is, God demonstrated (showed us) His love to us in the death of Christ.

So in this short verse from Paul’s letter to the Romans, we gain insight into the love of God. This verse corroborates what Jesus said in John 15:13 when He told his disciples that “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

Consequently, what Jesus did to save us, is the most loving action that has ever taken place in the whole universe. No other loving action can compare to a righteous man dying for an unrighteous man.

Therefore, in the diverse ways that God loves us, the supreme way is in the death of Christ for us. And remember, Christ died for sinners, you and me included.

To be honest, we were in a mess or at our lowest, but God’s love through Christ’s death turned things around for us. That despite mankind’s rebellious behavior, God continued to love us.

Before God proved His love for you by this action, He loved you first (1 John 4:19). He loved you with agape love. Thus, Christ died so that your sins could be forgiven (Romans 3:23, Hebrews 9:22, 1 Peter 1:18-19, and Ephesians 1:7) and you could be reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). The death of Christ also brought justification (Romans 5:9) and availed eternal life (Romans 6:23) to you (Titus 3:7).

Prayer/Blessing

Thank You, Lord, for loving me and demonstrating Your love in the death of Christ. Amen.
