Proverbs 17:17 Devotional (Verse of the Day)
Proverbs 17:17 isn’t just a poetic proverb. It’s a spiritual principle about covenant-level friendship.
Moreover, true friendship is revealed in adversity. Some friends show up only when things are going well, when the sun is shining, and success is certain. But when life gets hard, who remains?
”A friend loves at all times,
Proverbs 17:17New International Version (NIV)
and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
A Friend for All Seasons
Proverbs 17:17 describes two powerful relationships: a friend and a brother. The verse isn’t contrasting them as much as it highlights their shared role in loving and supporting us through all the seasons of life.
“A friend loves at all times…”
This kind of friend isn’t driven by convenience or gain. Their love is consistent through mountaintops and valleys, victories and disappointments.
It’s therefore not about how long you’ve known them, but how deep their commitment goes. Because commitment is the backbone of true friendship.
“…and a brother is born for adversity.”
This part reminds us that true brotherhood often emerges in times of crisis. The person who shows up when others walk out is more than just an acquaintance. He/she is family in the truest sense.
God often places these people in our lives for the very purpose of helping us through hardship. He placed Jonathan in the life of David so that the former could help the latter escape the evil schemes of the former’s father.
Ultimately, this verse reminds us of the kind of community God calls us to be: not fair-weather friends, but steadfast companions. This is how we mirror Jesus, the ultimate friend who laid down His life for us (John 15:13).
Reflection
- Who are the people in your life who love you at all times? Have you thanked them lately?
- Are you the kind of friend or brother who remains through someone else’s adversity?
- God may be calling you to become the very support you’ve been praying to receive.
Prayer/Blessing
Lord,
Thank You for the gift of true friendship. Help me to love others consistently, not just when it’s easy or convenient.
Make me the kind of friend who reflects Your love, a friend for all times, and a brother in adversity. Strengthen my relationships and bring the right people into my life for the seasons ahead.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
